Felony Stop
Carrying out a felony stop safely and knowing correct procedures.
- Radio communication – Request felony stop, road name and cardinal direction, car description, number of occupants inside the vehicle, reason for felony stop. 20%
- Use of code 1, code 3 and code 2 – Ensure lights remain off until required 77s are on scene, switch to lights and sirens to pull over the suspect vehicle, sirens off when in position and lights on. 10%
- Positioning car/ officers/ suspects – Correct positioning of units (unit cadet is in), correct positioning when drawing weapons at the suspects (ideally behind car door) and ensuring suspects are placed behind the police vehicle, or inside it when placed in cuffs. 20%
- Ability to lead the stop – Taking lead on each stage of the stop and knowing when to radio the next stage of stop (i.e., calling a vehicle sweep once car is visually clear). 30%
- Communication to suspects – Direct and clear communications with individuals inside the suspect vehicle (engine off, window down, throw the keys out the window, step out of the vehicle, put hands up, look through eyes, step backwards in X direction, announce cuffs, repeat for other suspects) Ensure communication is given if a suspect tries to turn around whilst moving backwards. 20%
